Five feet of burning wood, without a single piece of firewood. Quick Facts • Viewing Area: 60″ wide, with a high-glass front nearly two feet tall. • Fuel: Natural gas or propane. • Controls: Handheld remote with thermostat; wall switch and app control optional. • Fan: None Who It’s For Most linear gas fireplaces make no secret of being gas: a straight ribbon of flame over a bed of glass or stone. It’s warm, and it’s handsome, but nobody mistakes it for a wood fire. You need a fire that reads as burning wood at the scale of a modern linear fireplace. This one builds into a framed wall, so it fits a new build or a remodel where the fireplace is meant to be the centerpiece of the room. Choose a standard linear burner and you get clean flames over media; choose the Ortal Wilderness Front 60H and the first question guests ask is whether it burns wood. What Makes It Special The Wilderness burner is Ortal’s answer to the ribbon flame. Fire rises through and around a stacked ceramic log set five feet wide , so the flames move and flicker the way a hearth fire does instead of standing in a straight line. The glass is nearly two feet tall, and interior lighting comes built in—the logs read like a laid fire even when it isn’t burning. You also choose how the heat comes through. The protective screen is a fine metal mesh that’s nearly invisible in front of the glass. The double-glass front adds a second pane with near-silent fans between them, keeping the outer glass below the 172°F safety standard —cooler to be near while the fire’s warmth still reaches the room. Either way, the remote holds the room at the temperature you set, cycling the fire on its own. Possible Downsides • The double-glass versions need a household outlet and won’t run during a power failure; the screen version can run on battery power. • Log sets are the only media choice —driftwood, valley oak, or birch—with no stone or glass options on this model. • Interior finishes are matte black or black reflective glass ; Ortal’s brick-panel interiors are limited to its Traditional models. If you want a linear fireplace where the fire itself looks like burning wood, the Wilderness Front 60H is the right decision. The room it’s in becomes the one everyone ends up in. The 60H comes as a protective-screen or double-glass model, burns natural gas or propane, and takes a driftwood, valley oak, or birch log set against a matte black or black reflective glass interior.
