Who It’s For A wood fire is the fire people want to sit around—but an open wood fireplace sends most of its heat up the chimney, and the hauling, tending, and sweeping fall on you. Switching to gas has always meant trading that look for something that reads as an appliance. You need a gas insert that still looks like a wood fire. If you have a wood-burning fireplace and want push-button warmth without giving up the stacked-log hearth, the Ortal Wilderness 29 was built for you. Choose a standard gas insert instead and you’ll get the heat—but you can tell it’s a gas insert. What Makes It Special The Wilderness burner is Ortal’s answer to the one thing gas fires usually get wrong: the fire itself. Flames rise through a ceramic chopped-wood log set stacked the way a real hearth fire is laid, built to capture the look and feel of an authentic wood fire —not a row of flames behind glass. Because it seals into the fireplace you already have, the opening that used to pull warm air out of the house becomes a heater. At 81% efficiency, most of the gas you pay for becomes heat in your room , not heat up the chimney—enough for a large living room and the space beyond it. Set the remote’s thermostat to 70 and the fire holds the room there on its own. Possible Downsides • Chopped wood is the only log style offered on this model; the driftwood and dark brown sets from Ortal’s larger Wilderness fireplaces are not options here. • The screen front, surround, and interior panel are required selections —the finished look is assembled from your choices, not a standard configuration. If you want gas convenience without a fire that announces itself as gas, the Wilderness 29 is the right decision. The room with the fire becomes the room the house lives in.
